Academy's roots go back to Academy Books on West 18th Street in the seventies. When the rest of the country decided vinyl was finished, Mike at the shop picked up close to a hundred thousand records, which was reason enough to open somewhere dedicated to non-classical music. Academy Records opened on East 10th Street in 2001 and the vinyl-only offshoot, Academy LPs, opened on East 12th the same year and has not moved since. Rock, jazz, soul, funk, country and folk, deep in all of them - Rolling Stone has named it among the best record shops in the country
