Amoeba started on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 1990, founded by Marc Weinstein, Dave Prinz and Mike Boyder, all of them ex-Rasputin Records. The Hollywood shop opened in November 2001 and took up an entire block of Sunset Boulevard; it moved to Hollywood Boulevard in 2021. It is routinely called the largest independent record store in the world, and the scale is the point - the used racks run deep enough that people plan trips around them, and the in-store performances have pulled in names far too big for the room.
