Luiz Calanca opened Baratos Afins in the Galeria do Rock on 24 May 1978 and it is the oldest shop in the gallery, spread across five units (314 to 318) on the second floor. The stock runs past 100,000 records - more than 110,000 titles on vinyl and 35,000 CDs by its own count - across rock, punk, pop, metal and hard rock as well as Brazilian music. What sets it apart from any other big shop is that it became a label too: it started when Arnaldo Baptista, of Os Mutantes, arranged with Calanca to put out his second solo record independently, and went on to release Rita Lee, Itamar Assumpção, Mercenárias and the post-punk compilation Não São Paulo (1985).
