John Dreznes bought a small gift and novelty shop on the far South Side in 1967 for his wife Christine, in a year when Chicago had riots, the draft and very little certainty. It became a record shop, and then it became the record shop: John and Christine bought up failing South Side stores for their stock until they outgrew the room and took the Western Avenue storefront in September 1971. Their son Jack joined in 1974 out of the Army and eventually opened four more shops; Randy came in after college in 1978. Five branches at its peak, all folded back into the original when the CD and then the MP3 nearly finished the trade off. Record Store Day brought it back
