Birdland opened on Barrack Street on 8 October 1991 and, four moves later, trades from level 4 of the Dymocks Building on George Street. It calls itself a purveyor of the finest jazz, blues, soul and world music, and sorts its racks into jazz, blues, rock, country, classical, electronic and soul/funk, largely on CD, SACD, XRCD and Blu-spec, plus vinyl LPs and DVDs. Its own label has taken two ARIAs: Fire by the Mark Simmonds Freeboppers, and Duologue by Mike Nock and Dave Liebman in 2007.
