Blackbyrd Myoozik opened in 1993 on Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona, the historic strip that carries most of Edmonton's music life, and describes itself as fiercely independent - a phrase worth keeping because it is the shop's own. New and used CDs and vinyl across everything from punk to experimental, chosen by staff who are expected to know every rack rather than just their own. It has since opened a second shop in Calgary, which makes it one of the few independents in the country to have grown rather than merely survived.
