Cheap Thrills opened in 1971 and is the oldest record shop still running in Montreal. It was the first in the city to sell second-hand vinyl, and later the first to sell used CDs - which sounds like a small distinction until you remember that a used-record trade is what lets a city's music circulate rather than simply be bought. It is upstairs on Metcalfe, sells books alongside the records, and runs a mail-order catalogue of more than ten thousand titles. Fifty-five years of being the shop other Montreal shops grew up around.
