Chia Chia opened in 1976 inside the Zhonghua Market, the enormous strip of concrete arcades that ran down Zhonghua Road and was, for a generation of Taipei people, simply where you went for records. The market was demolished in 1992 and the shop moved out to Zhonghua Road itself in 1988, which is where it still trades - one of the few businesses to have survived the loss of the building that made it. Fifty years of deliberately refusing to specialise: pop next to classical, jazz, rock, and Japanese and Korean releases
