Clampdown began as a mail order business in the eighties, worked the record fair circuit, and opened its first shop in Manchester's Corn Exchange in 1990. The IRA bomb of 1996 tore through the city centre and destroyed most of the stock. Rising costs and a growing mail order side let it downsize to Paton Street in the Northern Quarter in 2004, where it still trades in new, old and rare vinyl - rock, punk, indie, funk, soul and jazz, with a deep Madchester and Factory section and a lot of hard-to-find out-of-print CDs, books and tapes
