Gijs Molenaar opened Concerto on Utrechtsestraat on 25 November 1955, selling instruments, parts, gramophone records, players and sheet music - and initially only instruments, because the record shop already on the street objected to the competition. In 1957 he took on a large second-hand collection and put it on the floor, which nobody was doing, and worked his way into selling new records alongside it. The single small shop now runs through five connected buildings and is the largest record store in the Netherlands as well as the oldest in Amsterdam. Little Steven of the E Street Band has called it the best record shop in the world.
