John Polifronio and his wife Susan started Counterpoint in 1979 as a classical boutique working out of the back of a bookshop on Hollywood Boulevard. The Boulevard being what it was then, they moved the following year and sublet six hundred square feet of a frame shop in Franklin Village - then took over the frame shop, then the storefront next door.
