Giovanni D'Amato opened on St John's Street in Valletta in 1885 selling furniture, moved into gramophones as the century turned, and the family has been on that spot ever since - it is reckoned to be the oldest record shop in the world still trading from its original premises, with 1885 set into the floor at the door and the marble front and wooden window still as they were. It did not only sell Maltese music, it made it: the first recordings of Maltese songs were cut by D'Amato in the 1930s. Now in the fifth generation of the same family.
