Derrick opened an electrical shop on Talbot Street in Port Talbot in 1956, selling records, radios and hi-fi, and worked out fairly quickly that the records were the profitable part. The family opened a second shop given over to pop and rock - said to be the first in Wales dedicated to it - and when Port Talbot was redeveloped in 1968 and one of the shops was due for demolition, they moved the record trade to Swansea. It is on Oxford Street now, run by Derrick's nephew Chris Stylinaou, seventy years on from a counter that was mostly radios.
