Disco Centro opened on 26 April 1976, and it opened on the ground: the founder spent his savings on a batch of records and laid them out on the pavement in front of Guatemala City's Parque Central. It grew from that into the reference point for buying music in Guatemala and across Central America, and it is still trading fifty years later from the Gran Centro Comercial in Zona 4. Vinyl, acetates, cassettes, CDs, and the local weighting is the reason to go - rock and baladas and salsa, but also marimba, which is Guatemala's national instrument and is not stocked in depth anywhere else.
