Boualem Benhaoua opened a cassette shop in Oran in the early 1980s called Maghreb Musique, and out of it came the label that took raï out of Algeria: Disco Maghreb signed and released Cheb Khaled, Cheb Hasni and Cheb Mami, which is close to saying it released the genre. Oran had invented raï in the 1920s; this shop is the reason the rest of the world heard it in the 1980s. Hasni was murdered in 1994 by militants who objected to his love songs, and the shop carried on. In 2022 DJ Snake named a track after it, tens of millions of people watched the video, and young Algerians started arriving to be photographed under the giant model cassette over the door. Macron turned up that August too.
