Guillermo Aguilar was an architect, and in 1955 he and his brother Luis opened a record shop in the Tabacalera, a few streets from the Monument to the Revolution. They had come to records the hard way: their father had left, their sister had died, their mother had little to give them, and the two of them were the kind of music obsessives who were producing and picking the records for a radio programme by the age of fifteen. Seventy years on it is still the family's shop, run by Jorge Guillermo Aguilar, the founder's son, and it is reckoned to be the only vinyl-and-acetate shop of its era left trading in the city. More than 100,000 records, 33s and 78s, alongside the antiques and objects the family has accumulated; the brothers' own original collection hangs on the walls next to black-and-white photographs of their mother.
