Diverse opened in Newport in 1988 under John Richards, and moved to Charles Street in 1999. Paul Hawkins had joined a few years earlier and built an LP mail order arm in the mid-nineties, at the very point vinyl looked finished - a bet on a resurgence that turned into the shop's trump card and made it one of the largest independent vinyl retailers in the country. It runs from first singles to serious audiophile territory, with Mobile Fidelity and Analogue Productions pressings, SACDs and staff-curated recommendation racks
