Down Home Music was established in 1976 by Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz as a brick and mortar retail outlet for roots music releases from labels all over the world, and the El Cerrito shop on San Pablo Avenue has been serving roots music ever since. The stock runs to blues, country, folk, jazz, cajun and zydeco, Mexican and gospel, plus books, magazines, music DVDs and Les Blank films. Following Chris's death in 2023 the store re-incorporated as a non-profit foundation with a museum and gallery space, an edited version of the SF airport Down-Home Music exhibition on the walls, and live in-store music. They buy used 45, 78 and LP records.
