Rick Wojcik and J.P. Schauer, both University of Chicago alumni, started Dusty Groove in 1996 as an online-only shop run out of an apartment on the South Side - the idea came out of a crate digging trip that ended in a snowstorm in the Pennsylvania mountains. It worked immediately, and by December that year local demand had forced them into monthly in-person sales. An office in Wicker Park followed a year later, and in 2001 the business moved into the three-storey building at 1120 North Ashland it still occupies. Warehouse and shop together run to some thirty thousand items, with several hundred new titles added daily.
