Matt Vaughan had worked in two Seattle record shops as a teenager, and in 1987, with both about to go under at the same time, he went to each owner and offered to merge them. Easy Street opened in West Seattle's Junction in 1988 and moved the following year to the corner site in the historic Hamm Building where it still is. He took the unit next door in 1999, put in a kitchen and bar, and by 2001 was running a full cafe alongside the shop. A second, larger Queen Anne store ran for eleven years until 2013. Rolling Stone put it in the ten best record shops in the country in 2018, and it is a founding member of Record Store Day.
