Eel Pie Records opened on 8 June 2017, started by two local friends, Kevin Jones and Phil Penman - Penman with 39 years in the music industry behind him. The name comes from Eel Pie Island a few hundred yards away, whose club made the borough's name in jazz, blues and early rock and roll. It stocked new and second-hand vinyl side by side from the first day, runs Third Thursday in-store new music evenings, and started the High Tide Festival in 2019 as a free event - now around a hundred acts across fifteen-odd stages
