Masao Tsubaki opened Flash Disc Ranch in Shimokitazawa in 1982 and has run it for more than forty years. The entrance is wedged between two halves of the same game centre, music comes out of old boxy speakers, and the walls are covered in murals and handwritten signs. The stock is used and wide - pop, rock, jazz, funk, soul, R&B, electronic and world - with a particular depth in Japanese jazz fusion and city pop. The boxes of three-hundred-yen records are the reason people keep coming back; a fair number of the seventies and eighties sleeves are worth that on their own
