Folk Arts Rare Records is a San Diego music institution and one of the oldest record stores in California, open seven days a week at 3610 University Ave and often staying open past six. It was started by Lou Curtiss, a festival organiser and cultural preserver who brought Tommy Jarrell, Lydia Mendoza, Bukka White, Dennis McGee, Rose Maddox and Bill Monroe to the San Diego area, and the store itself hosted Tom Waits, Sam Chatmon and local bluesman Thomas Shaw. New owner Brendan Boyle plans to work tirelessly to keep the place alive, the Lou Curtiss Sound Library lives on through it, and the shop is always buying records.
