Nathalie and Gilles spent fifteen years managing record shops in France, then got tired of Parisian life and moved to Montreal with a shipping container full of records. Francophonies opened on 1 May 2003 on Saint-Denis, in the middle of the city's student and artistic quarter, and moved to Rue Ontario Est near the Village on 15 March 2008. Over 20,000 vinyl records collected on both sides of the Atlantic are on the floor, all of it francophone music, which makes it the deepest shelf of its kind anywhere in North America.
