Bob Say, previously an owner of Moby Disc, opened Freakbeat on Ventura Boulevard in 2003 hoping to last ten years; it has more than doubled that. Wooden bins run the length of the floor and the walls carry posters, rare pressings and enough memorabilia to read as a history of collecting in the Valley. The name comes from freakbeat, the short-lived 1965 English style that sat between mod and r&b, which tells you most of what you need to know about the taste behind the counter.
