Generation opened on Thompson Street in 1992 and has served the Village for three decades on the strength of being obscure, outrageous or just plain weird, in its own description. Punk, hardcore and metal are the specialisms but the range is wide. The layout matters: new vinyl across most genres on the ground floor, and the basement of used records that is the reason people cross town for it. Mark Yoshitomi runs it.
