Gramaphone opened on North Clark Street in 1969 selling folk, jazz and blues, on a stretch then known as record store alley. In the early eighties, with house music taking hold of the city, the manager Andy Moy started keeping house 12-inches behind the counter for customers to ask about, and the shop turned into the first in Chicago built around vinyl for DJs.
