Gramola was founded in 1924 as a retailer and distributor for the Gramola label and His Master's Voice, and it survived the collapse of the label in the 1929 crash to become Vienna's specialist house for classical music. Its shop on the Graben is an Art Nouveau jewel designed by Dagobert Peche, filmed and photographed many times, and it publishes its own recordings alongside a deep classical stock. A hundred years on the same grand shopping street is a rarity anywhere in the record trade.
