Gramola has traded on the Graben in Vienna since 1924, when it opened as a retailer and distributor for the Gramola label and His Master's Voice. It calls itself the oldest record shop in Austria and is still a family business, now in its fourth generation. The shop itself is a Jugendstil jewel designed by Dagobert Peche, and one of the sixteen surviving original paintings of Nipper hangs in it. Classical is the whole business: it sells, produces and distributes CDs and DVDs, and is the Austrian agent for labels including Supraphon, Hänssler Classic, LSO and Mariinsky. It has taken top spots in international rankings of the world's best classical shops more than once.
