Michael McFadin, who founded the Luv N' Haight label, opened Groove Merchant on Haight Street in early 1990. Chris Veltri - Cool Chris - moved up from Los Angeles in 1994, started working there at twenty-three, and took the shop over in 1997; he has been buying for it for thirty years and runs the Dis-Joint and Re-Joint labels off the back of it. Jazz, soul, rock, international, blues, disco, hip-hop, punk and soundtracks, and a reputation for rare records that brought the Beastie Boys, Pete Rock, Alchemist and Madlib through the door looking for things to sample
