Hawkeye began as a label in 1974 and Gerry Anderson and Roy 'Hawkeye' Forbes-Allen opened the Craven Park Road shop in 1977; the first release was Dennis Brown's Whip Them Jah. Anderson worked the counter and was treated as a reggae authority, using his connections to find records customers could not get anywhere else. The context matters: through the seventies and eighties the run between Neasden and Harlesden - Church Road, Craven Park Road, the High Street - held dozens of record shops and labels, with Trojan, Planetone and Jet Star all nearby. Hawkeye and Starlight across the road are the only two left
