Honest Jon's has been running since 1974, when sociology lecturer John Clare took over an old butcher's on Golborne Road and started trading jazz records. It moved to its Portobello Road address in 1979 and has been part of West London's musical furniture ever since. Mark Ainley and Alan Scholefield run it now, having taken over from Clare himself. The shelves cover jazz, blues, reggae, dance, soul, folk and what the shop files as outernational. The Honest Jon's label, run with Damon Albarn, started in the early 2000s and its London Is the Place for Me series dug up the music of young Black London.
