Hungry Ear Records is Hawaii's oldest record store, open since 1980, founded by Luke Yamashiro, Dennis Chun and Reynold Yep and quickly a landmark for lovers of every musical style and format. Former employees Ward Yamashita and Dennie Chong bought it in 2008 to keep the dream alive, and Ward still runs it with his staff from the SALT complex in Kakaako. It offers the state's largest new vinyl collection plus an extensive used LP section, specialises in rare Hawaiian albums, cassettes and CDs, carries a huge selection of rock, jazz and reggae, and is always buying used LPs, CDs and memorabilia.
