The Jacaranda opened on Slater Street in 1958 and gave a stage to the Silver Beetles, the band John Lennon and Paul McCartney had before they had the other one. It is a working record shop now as well as a cafe and a basement live room, and it stocks local acts heavily alongside prog, funk and second-hand across the board. Two things make it more than a gift shop trading on the address: listening booths, and a 1948 Voice-O-Graph booth that cuts a record while you sing into it. The building has been making records one way or another for most of a century.
