Hunter Smith opened Jumbo in September 1971, taking the name and logo from his Jumbo Mobile Discotheque, after an acquaintance suggested he sell records at the back of a cassette and tape equipment shop to bring people in. It started tiny, at the top of a shopping arcade, selling the reggae and soul he was playing at the disco - Isaac Hayes's Black Moses was the first big seller. Hunter and his wife Lornette ran it from 1973 until they sold in 2014, moving between the Queens Arcade, the Merrion Centre and the St John's Centre. Nick Fraser and Justinia Lewis, long-standing customers, bought it and kept the staff on.
