Alfred and Eileen Marbeck met in 1918, both accomplished pianists deep in Auckland's music scene: he taught, played for silent films and ran his own orchestra, and both worked for a time in a Queen Street music shop selling instruments and wax cylinders. In the early 1930s they broke away, leased a shop in Queen's Arcade and opened Marbecks in 1934. It built a reputation for service that has outlasted everything since, took a larger corner site in the arcade in 1979 where it still trades, and added a second shop at 164 Queen Street in 1997, surviving the 1998 power crisis that closed five weeks of central-city trading. New Zealand's widest range of CDs, DVDs, classical, jazz and specialist imports.
