McKAY's was founded in 1974 by owners who reckoned the traditional educational system restrained learning and set out to build an alternate university, starting with its library. The idea was a free enterprise library: a store where you could pick books up cheaply, keep them as long as you liked and bring them back for credit against something else, and second-hand stock meant it quickly held nearly every conceivable type of book. Today it trades books and records, with published tote limits and a clear list of what it will and will not take.
