McKay's was founded in 1974 by owners who thought the traditional educational system restrained learning and wanted to start an alternate university. Deciding the core of a university is its library, they conceived a free enterprise library: a store holding a wide variety of books you could get cheaply, keep as long as you liked and return for credit against something else. Second-hand stock meant the inventory quickly covered nearly every conceivable type of book, and the Knoxville store now trades as a bookstore and record store, with published guidance on how to sell and trade, tote limits and what they will and will not take.
