Melodica has been on Tom Mboya Street in central Nairobi since 1971, and like most of the important African record businesses it was never only a shop - it is a publisher and several labels as well, which is how east and central African music of the 1960s onward actually got released. The racks run from the 1950s to the 1990s, which covers benga, rumba and the whole run of Kenyan pop, and a good deal of it exists on record because this company put it there.
