Mingus started in 1997 in a red hut on wheels next to Emmaus on Gardesvagen, and in autumn 2002 opened the doors of the new Mingus at Skolgatan 98 in Ost pa stan, Umea. It sets out to be a bookshop and record shop of the left, in the middle of the public debate, with Malaysian poetry next to Moa Martinsson's proletarian novels and Noam Chomsky's system criticism. The focus is mainly second-hand and antiquarian with some new stock picked to taste, and although books were the centre from the start the music has always been there: jazz, blues, Nordic folk and world music are the main seam. The shop is named after the American jazz musician Charles Mingus. They buy books and records, paying in cash or store credit, and take donations. Open Tuesday to Friday 11-17 and Saturday 12-16.
