Eric Isaacson, previously a manager at Saturn Records in Oakland, opened Mississippi Records in 2003 on the avenue it takes its name from. It is a shop and a reissue label at once, built around old-time gospel, blues, folk, international records and pre-Beatles rock, chosen with a stubbornness that made both halves of it internationally known - the label runs to Americana, international and punk, and split in 2011 into the Change and Little Axe imprints. The Albina Avenue building also holds a cafe, an equipment repair bench and the Portland Museum of Modern Art. Cyrus Moussavi and Gordon Ashworth took over in January 2019, with Isaacson staying on to run label projects
