Miyagi Records is not your average record store: it specialises in obscure and classic soul, funk, jazz, Latin, rock, blues, world music, new wave and industrial, hip-hop, disco and house across LPs, 12-inch singles and 45s, with CDs, cassettes, vintage books, music gear and magazines alongside. The owners are hip-hop heads and producers, so drum breaks and sample-related items run deep. The name comes from the kanji for shrine and fortress, and the shop takes its cue from the hyper-curated, hidden away vinyl shops of Tokyo, aiming to be your secret spot. It started in late 2019 as a side project between gigs and became a record shop and education space on the South Side, hosting courses and community events. They buy records by appointment.
