You reach Monorail by walking through Mono, the vegan cafe-bar in King's Court, which is the first thing anyone tells you about it and the least interesting. Stephen McRobbie of The Pastels and Dep Downie opened it in December 2002, both collectors, both label people, both musicians - and the shop reads exactly like a shop chosen by those three things at once. Its relationships run deep into the city's music: Belle and Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub, Mogwai, Optimo. It also programmes monthly film screenings with Glasgow Film Theatre, which is not a record shop's job and is precisely why Monorail matters to Glasgow more than its square footage suggests.
