The Montclair Book Center has been part of the downtown Montclair scene since late 1984, opened by Peter Ryby as a branch of the now closed but legendary Passaic Book Center. It has grown into three levels across two buildings of new, used and rare books, and calls itself one of the largest independent bookstores in New Jersey. The focus has always been the printed word, but the shop also carries a fantastic selection of vinyl records and CDs in many musical genres, plus journals, tarot cards, puzzles and gifts. Under new ownership it now hosts bi-weekly author readings, a book club, a comedy series, art shows and more.
