Don and Laureen McLeod and Dan and Patty Lissy opened Music Millennium on 15 March 1969 in an 800 square foot room on the corner of 32nd and East Burnside, stocking the underground records the department stores and drugstores would not. It grew to its present size within five years and added a classical shop, The Musical Offering, later Classical Millennium, which closed in 2012. It is the oldest and largest record store in the Pacific Northwest and was ninth on Spin's list of the fifteen best independents in the country in 2009. It is also the shop that barbecued Garth Brooks's In Pieces in 1993, in protest at his position on shops reselling used records.
