In June 1991 Mayhem's guitarist Euronymous opened a shop here called Helvete - Norwegian for hell - and its basement became the meeting place of the scene he called the Black Circle, the room where Norwegian black metal effectively formed. He closed it in 1993, shortly before Varg Vikernes murdered him. Twenty years on Kenneth 'Neseblod' reopened it as Neseblod Records, and gathered enough from Euronymous's contemporaries to make the basement a kind of museum - the original 'Black Metal' graffiti Euronymous painted is still on the wall. Upstairs is packed floor to ceiling with vinyl, tapes, CDs and paraphernalia. A fire tore through the basement on 9 April 2024 and there were real fears the archive was lost; a GoFundMe passed its goal fast, the top floor is open again, and the basement is being rebuilt. No shop in this directory is more a piece of music history than this one
