Northside on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy has been Melbourne's shop for soul and funk since 2002, though the fuller description is black music of every kind - hip-hop, soul, reggae and funk in one room. It is owned by the DJ Chris Gil, who is by every account a walking encyclopaedia of the local and international soul scene, and the shop is where new soul in the city goes first
