Marie and Charlie Joe Henderson started selling records in 1966, and Charlie Joe - the Mayor of Maxwell Street, as everyone called him - built a business that outlasted everything the West Side had thrown at it. The original Madison Street storefront burned down in the riots after Martin Luther King's assassination. At their peak they ran ten shops across the West Side. What is left is the best of it: ten rooms on West Madison holding funk, soul, blues, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, Latin and reggae, with the walls doubling as a photo gallery, because the point was always to let the neighbourhood see itself. Their granddaughter runs it now, four decades on from the Madison Street shop opening
