Shirani Rea opened Peaches in 1975 because she had fallen for the musicians of her adopted city and wanted to be useful to them, and she has been in the shop nearly every day of the fifty years since. It spent almost thirty of those on Gentilly Boulevard, where it became an incubator - record release parties, concerts, fundraisers - and where it mattered enormously to New Orleans hip-hop in the nineties: Rea employed local artists and helped bring on the Cash Money team before their national distribution deal in 1998.
