George 'Peckings' Price opened Peckings on Askew Road in 1974, at 142, and it became the first London outlet importing records directly from Jamaica - two years before Island began taking reggae to a wider audience. George had known Coxsone Dodd in Kingston, and for years the shop was the sole UK distributor for Studio One, which is most of what you need to know about its place in London sound system history. Before the shop he sold from a suitcase around Ladbroke Grove, supplying Duke Vin, Count Suckle and Daddy Vego. George died in 1994 and his sons took it on - Tony and Trevor keeping the shop, Chris and Duke building the Peckings label. A blue plaque now marks the Askew Road premises
